JW/Motion Mix is above all else a group of women that makes dances together. Working from a common language of release techniques and Contact Improvisation, much of our movement vocabulary investigates gravity, momentum, and the physical challenge that is riding the brink of control. As dances come to life, collaboratively developed and preliminarily improvised movement ideas coalesce into abstract narratives with the body and movement as visual art. Our dances examine the human condition by enacting agency and empowerment, as well as by creating opportunities to practice taking on both active and passive relationships to the activities on display. To that end our creative process engages a literal practice of empathy and a gathering of information about both oneself and the group by momentarily “being” someone else. Art, as life, can be both beautiful and painful. As we work to embody the full spectrum of human experience, we hope to create opportunities for reconsidering the habitual apathy and complacency of our society. |
